'Tis the Season

Can you believe it? The holiday season is officially here. Actually it probably came to town a couple of weeks ago. That’s when I noticed the Christmas decorations in the mall, and commercials talking about Christmas shopping. Yikes. I’m already behind. But with Thanksgiving upon us, it’s a good time for Avs fans to step back and take a look at what they’re thankful for as far as the Avalanche go. A great start to the season, some non-household names contributing to the success of the team, and the solid play of trusty veterans. But given the holiday spirit, I think there is something even bigger we can be thankful for. Recently Milan Hejduk and Avs captain Adam Foote visited the Urban Peak homeless shelter. At the shelter, the two veteran players prepared food for the shelter, whose clients are mostly teenagers. As part of the NHL initiative, “Rock and Wrap it Up,” the Avs and the Pepsi Center are partnering with the Denver Inner City Parish food donation program called “We don’t Waste.” WDW daily collects and distributes food leftover from the Pepsi Center and other places that otherwise would go to waste. The food is distributed to 20 area nonprofit organizations including Urban Peak. Foote and Hejduk helped make some snacks from the donated food, but they also talked with the teenagers about goal setting in life. Something that no matter what you want to be in life, makes your path a lot easier. So while it’s exciting as fans to be thankful for a team that is doing well, we should also be thankful that the veteran leaders of this team are setting an example that goes well beyond what happens on the ice. And that’s a game winner no matter how you look at it. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
