Nuggets.com Q&A Interview with Masai Ujiri on Nuggets.com

Here is the Nuggets.com Q&A Interview with Masai Ujiri on Nuggets.com:

In a country saturated with soccer, Masai Ujiri tried to immerse himself in basketball after being introduced to the American game as a teenager in northern Nigeria.

His passion for hoops and tireless work ethic started him down a career path that reached another milestone Friday when he was officially named executive vice president of basketball operations for the Denver Nuggets.

Ujiri, pronounced ma-SIGH u-JEER-e, spent four seasons as a scout for the Nuggets from 2003-07, and he returns after three years working as an assistant general manager with the Toronto Raptors. He also has served as the director of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program since 2002.

Nuggets.com caught up with Ujiri to get his thoughts on his new job and what lies ahead for the 2010-11 season.

Q: I read a quote from you when you left Denver in 2007, saying maybe you’d be back someday. Is that true, and did you ever think it would be as the executive VP of basketball operations?

A: I did say that. You never know when these things happen. I had a great time there and a great working experience. It made me grow in the business. I just thought one day we might unite again. I remember saying that to a lot of people and here it is.

Q: The Nuggets have been in the news quite a bit this summer. What is your take on the team?

A: First of all, we have the whole Melo (Carmelo Anthony) situation. I’m excited to meet with Melo and just go over everything. I don’t know what difference I’m going to make, but I’m excited. This has been Melo’s team and Melo’s city almost, basketball-wise. He’s built a legacy here. The players who have played in one city and stayed in one city have done pretty well.
I know last year there was a challenge with George Karl and his illness. But I’ve talked to him and he’s in full spirits. He’s pumped up about the season. That’s positive. I think I can bring a general positive vibe into everything, from the front office to the team. I’m blessed and honored to be in this situation and I’m going to make the best out of it and make a difference in any way I can by working hard.

Q: Regarding Carmelo, do you think it helps that you already have a relationship with him from your first time in Denver?

A: With this thing, you don’t know. I know Melo. I’m not going to try to use anything on him. I’m just going to go there and be myself. I know Melo knows I’m a loyal person. Melo is a loyal guy. Different things have occurred within the last couple years and he’s feeling a certain way. Sometimes it takes time to think about it some more and breathe. Melo’s a positive guy. I’ve always known him to be like that.

Q: You have an extensive background in international scouting. How will that influence the Nuggets' roster in the years to come?

A: I started off with that background, but this is the NBA and you have to expand a little bit. I’ve studied the game in every different aspect that I can. You go for the best talent available, wherever it is. You fish it out. That’s how I’ve scouted all my career. Doesn’t matter where it is – international, domestic, college, anywhere. We’ll get the best talent to Denver and we’ll manage it. There’s no preference.

You want to have unique ways in which you scout. You have thoughts in your head. Scouting is like CIA work and investigative work. You create a lot of stuff and try a lot of stuff. Some works and some doesn’t. I try to get creative.

Q: Josh Kroenke figures to take a more prominent role in the front office this season. What do you think your working relationship with him will be like?

A: It’s going to be great. I think I’ve talked to Josh three times already today and what time is it? (1 p.m.) I have a great feeling for this. I love it. He’s young, he’s vibrant. He wants to succeed and he’s a good person. He’s got a great business mind and I think he’s going to be tremendous.

Q: As far as I can tell, you are the first native of Africa to hold the title of executive vice president of basketball operations for an NBA team. Do you consider yourself a pioneer?

A: It’s just an unbelievable opportunity for me. I carry the continent of Africa on my shoulders proudly. To be given this opportunity, it is a blessing.

Q: In talking to you, it sounds like one of your strengths is never taking your job or your position in life for granted.

A: Never. I don’t believe in that. I believe in hard work. I believe in honesty. I believe in treating people how you want to be treated yourself. That’s why I have a great relationship with the Kroenkes. The opportunity’s so big, I cannot afford in any way to not work hard or not give my best.

Q: As an assistant GM in Toronto, you were able to work with well-respected NBA executive Bryan Colangelo. What did you learn during your time with the Raptors that will help you now that you’re back in Denver?

A: I learned more about scouting. I learned more about player negotiations. I learned more about working trades from Bryan Colangelo. I learned about how to run a front office. Toronto is a class organization. Sometimes it doesn’t translate into wins and championships but it’s top-class. It’s been great for me to learn that way. Also, working close in hand with the NBA and Basketball Without Borders and all the camps and related events, it makes you grow in your mind and your thoughts. It makes you deal with people better and have more respect for the game.

Q: Considering that Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon is from Nigeria, was he someone you considered as a role model?

A: Charles Barkley always used to say, ‘My idol is my dad.’ It’s the same for me. My dad worked hard. He was honest. He told me I should never look back. He told me I should be the best person and the best at what you do. He was my role model. I have a lot of people who I look up to and who helped me with my career.

Q: You played college basketball in Montana and professionally overseas, but when were you first introduced to the game.

A: I started playing when I was 13 years old. Oliver Johnson, a coach from the United States, came over and tried to grow the game in northern Nigeria. He’s the one that taught us how to play. He ran the program. I loved the game. I spent every hour on the court. It’s an unbelievable sport. There’s not much opportunity over there (in Africa). That’s my frame of mind with providing coaching and infrastructure and opening up the dream.

Billups on Team USA roster, Nene out for Brazil

    submitted by Aaron Lopez 8-24-10

Chauncey Billups is ready to take on the world, but Nene will have to sit this one out.

As expected, Billups was among the 12 players named to the Team USA roster that will compete in the FIBA World Championships starting Saturday in Turkey.

Billups will not square off against his Nuggets teammate Nene, however. A right calf injury prevented Nene from competing for his native Brazil and he is back in Denver receiving treatment.

At 33, Billups is the oldest player on the U.S. team, which will have an average age of about 24. Before leaving for training camp with Team USA earlier this month, Billups said he didn’t expect the summer workload to affect his endurance during the 2010-11 season.

“This is my time of year when I’m turning it up anyway,” he said. “I’m doing stuff to get ready for the season. Other than the travel, it’s not like I’m doing that much more.”

Nene, meanwhile, strained his calf while training with the Brazilian national team. He played in all 82 regular-season games for the first time in his career in 2009-10 but sat out Denver’s final playoff game with a sprained left knee.

“We are excited to announce our continued partnership with Mile High Sports Radio, as well as the renewal of our relationship with Lincoln Financial Media,” said Paul Andrews, Executive Vice President of KSE. “We look forward to another great season of home team sports action with these two companies. With two great sports stations promoting the games, as well as one of the area’s most powerful AM signals serving as our radio home, we’ll be able to reach our fans in a very unique and fan-friendly manner.”

The new deal involves both of Mile High Sports Radio’s stations, KCKK AM 1510 and FM 93.7, as well as a pair of Lincoln Financial Media’s stations, KRWZ AM 950 and KKFN FM 104.3 The Fan, in a unique, three-party agreement that will see AM 950 serve as the primary carrier for games, Mile High Sports Radio AM 1510 and FM 93.7 as the carrier of conflict games when multiple teams play on the same day, and both Mile High Sports Radio and The Fan providing promotion for the teams and games.

”This is a creative partnership that took tremendous vision on the part of everyone involved,” said James Merilatt, President of Mile High Sports Radio. “It’s a win-win-win for Mile High Sports Radio, Lincoln Financial Media, and the Avalanche and Nuggets.”

“We’re excited to once again have the Avalanche and Nuggets on AM 950,” said Bob Call, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Lincoln Financial Media Company of Colorado. “And we’re looking forward to working with Mile High Sports Radio and the teams to build this one-of-a-kind partnership.”

Talent and all production for the Nuggets and Avalanche broadcasts will be provided by Kroenke Sports Enterprises. Further details on talent lineups will be provided in the coming weeks.

“We are delighted that through this three-way partnership that includes AM 950, Mile High Sports Radio will remain the home of the Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets,” said Matt Hutchings, Altitude’s Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. “With this groundbreaking partnership, we’ll be able to ensure that our games are heard by our fans up and down the Front Range.”

An open letter to Carmelo Anthony by Chris Dempsey Plus a Photo of J.R. Smith's New Neck Tattoo

Here is An open letter to Carmelo Anthony by Chris Dempsey:

    Dear Carmelo,

You and I have never met before, but I've been paying your salary ever since you came to Denver seven years ago.

    That's right, me.

Me and thousands like me are the reason you get to play basketball for many millions of dollars. We're the ones who pay exorbitant prices for tickets - which, frankly, most of us can't even afford - whether you play or not. So for all the millions we've bestowed upon you, I'm hoping you'll extend me the courtesy of reading this letter.

To be clear, this has been a two-way relationship. In return for those millions you've collected from us, you've given us seven great years of basketball here in Denver. You've routinely played hard. You've gotten the Nuggets into the playoffs for seven consecutive years. You helped bring us to the brink of our only NBA Finals appearance. You've had the guts to take countless game-ending or game-tying shots and, by my accounting, you've made about half of them. And you've made Denver Nuggets basketball relevant on a national scale again for the first time in almost 20 years.

On top of all that, you've been active in the community with your charity work and basketball camp for which we greatly appreciate.

I guess this is my round-about way of saying you don't owe us much. After playing hard for seven years, you've earned the right to play in any market of your choosing (as you're alleged to be desirous of) and I - and many fans just like me - wish you nothing but the best for you and your family wherever you end up.

But as you mull over your options about whether or not to sign a contract extension to play in Denver, I hope you'll give what's written here some serious consideration. After all, for all those millions we've thrown your way, perhaps you could give staying in Denver another hard look. And here's why...

If you really want to win a championship while playing with a good friend or two and get the maximum amount of dollars plus guaranteed years while doing so, then Denver is the place to do it. That's right, Denver.

Now bear with me because it ain't happening this season, but it could very well happen two seasons from now if you're just a little patient. When the 2010-11 season concludes, the Nuggets - your Denver Nuggets - will finally have salary cap flexibility to build a long-term contending team around you. Gone will be Kenyon Martin's albatross of a contract. Gone will be a big chunk of Chauncey Billups' contract. And it's possible that J.R. Smith - you know, the guy who quit on your team in Game 6 of the 2010 playoffs at Utah - will be gone, too.

And in that salary void equaling in excess of $32 million, the Nuggets - with you as the team's focal point - will have their pick of the litter from the 2011 free agent class. Unfortunately, that class doesn't offer much. But it doesn't matter because chances are the season is going to be wiped out anyway thanks to the looming lockout (and you know what I'm talking about, you were just at the negotiating table with the owners in New York last week...we really need to keep you away from New York, by the way). A lockout, mind you, that will likely level the playing field for all 30 NBA teams. And don't you think Stan Kroenke will thrive in a system that doesn't just benefit the larger market teams? I know I do.

Therefore, with ample cap space and nowhere to spend it until 2012, the Nuggets will be in prime position to surround you with the talent you need to win it all. How would you like to play from 28 to 32 years old with your boy Chris Paul at point guard? Or maybe you'd settle for Deron Williams running the show? Need a big man? How does Robin Lopez at center sound? Or Chris Kaman? You saw what the Nuggets organization was able to do with no money when they brought in the likes of Chauncey, Arron Afflalo, Chris Andersen, Dahntay Jones and Ty Lawson these past two years. Just imagine what they could do with more than $32 million to play with?? (Of course, it doesn't help that they fired the guy who made those deals, but I digress...)

Meanwhile, come 2012 Kobe's Lakers, Duncan's Spurs and Nowitzki's Mavericks will be two years older than they are now. And they're already pretty damn old! So while your boys from Miami rack up 65-plus wins during the 2012-13 season, your Nuggets may have to settle for 60 but at least you'll get multiple nights in South Beach during the NBA Finals!

Look, I know the temptation to play in New York or Los Angeles is a powerful one. I've spent ample time in New York and have lived in Los Angeles. But before you jump ship, let's look at those situations a little more closely.

In Los Angeles, your options are the Lakers or the Clippers. Should you go to the Lakers, you'll always be a distant second banana to Kobe...a guy who doesn't always play nice with fourth or fifth bananas, nevermind thirds and seconds. Not only won't you be able to slack off in practice...ever...but if you wear the purple and gold, you'll forever be known as a guy riding Kobe's coattails. You really want that?

Should you go to the Clippers, I hope you sign for as many guaranteed seasons as possible because there's a 90% - make that a 95% - chance you're tearing at least one of your two ACLs within your first month in Clipperdom. That's just what happens there. Oh, and even if your contract reads "guaranteed" that means nothing to Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Just ask Mike Dunleavy. The bottom line is, should you become a Clipper be prepared to add a contract lawyer to your payroll.

Speaking of suspect organizations, what about your once-beloved but forever-cursed Knicks? Sure, playing in New York sounds fun in theory until you realize Knicks owner James Dolan is a spoiled rotten frat boy gone wild with no business competence whatsoever. Wanna know why the Knicks haven't been relevant since Bill Clinton got impeached? That's all on Dolan. And that old barn known as Madison Square Garden is nothing more than a rotting, rusting dump at this point. Is high-fiving with Spike Lee really worth giving away more than half your income in federal and state taxes? I certainly don't think so.

And while I'm sure the soon-to-be-Brooklyn Nets may seem appealing on paper, think about this before jettisoning the beautiful Mile High City with our 300 days of sunshine and countless parks: you'll be playing in Newark for two years for a defensive tyrant and the most incompetent GM not named David Kahn. I'm sure new Nets coach Avery Johnson will be thrilled with your offense-first/defense-is-optional playing style. Have fun with that.

And don't even think about going to Orlando to join forces with Dwight Howard. Not only will you fight over shots with Rashard Lewis, J.J. Redick, Mickael Pietrus and Jameer Nelson, but I hear Orlando is nothing more than a Mickey Mouse town (insert groan here).

And those are just the on-the-court issues.

I know you're newly married and your wife is probably egging you on to move to a more glamorous location. But think about this for a minute. You got married at 26 years old and she's 31. Chances are a rich guy like you with access to the best health care will live until you're at least 95 years old and, since women live longer than men, she'll be with you every step of the way. Meaning, you're now on the hook for 70-something years of matrimony. 70!! Tiger Woods couldn't do it for 10.

Rather than spend every day together for the next 70 years and risk getting on each other's nerves early and often, why not send her to your new house in Los Angeles for some much-needed time apart during the season? This way, you can concentrate on your first love - basketball - while she can focus on the things that are important to her. Trust me, if you truly love her, this can only be accomplished by staying in Denver.

So as you can see, not only does Denver provide you with the most money, the most guaranteed years, the opportunity to win a few rings with your friends and the best chance of having a long-term, healthy marriage, but it's the only place with fans like me who have your best interests at heart.

I sincerely appreciate your time and consideration for reading this letter and look forward to seeing you at Pepsi Center on October 27th against the Utah Jazz. I'll have my checkbook handy.

    Warm regards,

    Andrew Feinstein

    Denver Nuggets Season Ticket Holder

The Nuggets Beat with Aaron Lopez Newest Blog Entry on Nuggets.com

Here is The Nuggets Beat with Aaron Lopez Newest Blog Entry on Nuggets.com:

    Melo speculation borders on comical

    submitted by Aaron Lopez 8-11-10

Of the 6.8 billion human beings on Earth, 99.9999 percent of them will never have a chance to weigh the pros and cons of signing or rejecting an eight-figure contract extension.

That doesn’t stop people from pretending to know what Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony is thinking or what his course of action will be.

It’s no secret that the Nuggets have offered their franchise player and three-time All-Star a three-year extension worth roughly $65 million. His subsequent “silence” on the matter has been described by NBA writers, columnists, bloggers and talk-radio hosts as “eerie,” “telling,” and “deafening.”

There are a couple things people need to keep in mind before they start putting him in another uniform (most notably, that of the New York Knicks).

First of all, maybe Melo is simply enjoying his summer. He got married July 10, went on a honeymoon in Costa Rica and made a stop in Puerto Rico. Yes, the money would be life-changing for most people, but it’s not like Anthony is struggling to make his next mortgage payment. He's still playing under a contract that will pay him about $17 million in 2010-11.

Secondly, Anthony has until June 30, 2011, to sign an extension or opt out of the final year of his current deal. Who can blame him for taking his time before re-committing for an additional three years? If he doesn’t take the guaranteed security, he will assume the risks that come with that choice: injuries and a potential change in the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement in 2011.
