The Newest Nuggets Beat with Aaron Lopez Blog Entry on Former Nuggets and Coach Karl's Son Coby to play in Spain next season

Here is The Newest Nuggets Beat with Aaron Lopez Blog Entry on Former Nuggets and Coach Karl's Son Coby to play in Spain next season:

Coby Karl agrees to contract to play in Spain

submitted by Aaron Lopez 9-23-10

Coby Karl’s basketball journey is headed back overseas.

Karl, the son of Nuggets coach George Karl, said Thursday he has agreed to a one-year contract with CB Granada of the Spanish ACB, one of the world’s top professional leagues.

Karl, a 27-year-old combo guard, signed with the Nuggets on April 11 but did not appear in any regular-season or playoff games. After averaging 14 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists for Denver’s summer league team in Las Vegas, he was waived on Aug. 15.

“I don’t think it’s by any means having the (NBA) dream end,” he said. “I think it’s a process and a step. It’s been frustrating at times, but I’m very happy with where I am as player right now. I’m getting better and I still think there will be an opportunity in the future.”

After going undrafted out of Boise State in 2007, Karl has bounced between the NBA, the NBA Development League and the Spanish ACB. He has averaged 2.4 points and 1.2 rebounds in 24 career games with the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors.

Karl has shown that he has the skills and basketball IQ to play in the NBA – he had 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for Golden State on Feb. 2 – but he’s never been given a chance to play consistent minutes.

“You’re never going to change people’s minds that have impressions. It just takes one guy to like you,” he said. “It’s a game that you have to have patience and wait for the opportunity.”

After validating his talent in summer-league play, Karl returned to Denver to work on his perimeter shot and improve his overall game. Unable to find a suitable opportunity at an NBA training camp, he opted for the guaranteed contract in Spain, where the experience and exposure are invaluable while competing against NBA-caliber players such as Ricky Rubio, Jorge Garbajosa and Juan Carlos Navarro.

“I think Coby has done a great job with his career,” George Karl said. “I’m very proud of him. I wish I could see him play here in the NBA, but I think more realistic is he’ll play a lot of minutes in Spain. In the last couple years, the game of basketball hasn’t given back to him what I think he’s deserved, and maybe he’ll find that in Spain.”

SI.com Article on Nets in talks to acquire Carmelo

Here is the SI.com Article on Nets in talks to acquire Carmelo:

The Nets are "deeply into" trade discussions with Denver, Utah and Charlotte that would bring Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey, an executive briefed on the talks told SI.com on Friday.

The four-team deal has "many moving parts," the executive said, but Denver would receive No. 3 pick Derrick Favors from New Jersey and multiple draft picks. ESPN.com reported that Denver would also get forward Andrei Kirilenko from Utah, while Charlotte would get point guard Devin Harris from New Jersey and the Jazz would obtain forward Boris Diaw from the Bobcats.

A potential holdup is Anthony's willingness to accept a contract extension with New Jersey. The source said Anthony's refusal to do so would be "a deal breaker." Anthony, who has declined to sign Denver's three-year, $65 million extension offer, can become a free agent after this season.

The executive said the deal was not imminent.

Denver is said to want young players, draft picks and salary-cap flexibility in a trade for Anthony. The Knicks have long been considered Anthony's preferred destination, but New York lacks draft picks to include in a package. Anthony also favors a trade to another big market, Chicago, but the Bulls are reportedly reluctant to part with Joakim Noah, one of their best assets as a 25-year-old big man who averaged 10.7 points and 11 rebounds last season.

Anthony, 26, has spent his entire seven-year career in Denver, averaging 24.7 points and 6.2 rebounds and making the All-Star team three times. The Nuggets reached the Western Conference finals in 2009, but they've lost in the first round of the playoffs in each of Anthony's other six seasons.

The Nets, flush with cap space and coming off a 12-win season, failed to make a big splash in free agency under their new owner, Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, during an offseason in which they also hired Avery Johnson as coach and drafted 19-year-old power forward Favors. Instead, the Nets signed complementary players such as forward Travis Outlaw and guards Anthony Morrow and Jordan Farmar, and they acquired power forward Troy Murphy from Indiana as part of a four-team trade.

ESPN.com Articles on Former Nuggets Player Francisco Elson and Former Nuggets Player Malik Allen signing with different teams

Here are the ESPN.com Articles on Former Nuggets Player Francisco Elson and Former Nuggets Player Malik Allen signing with different teams:

    Jazz sign C Francisco Elson

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Jazz have signed free-agent center Francisco Elson.

The Jazz are adding the 7-foot, 240-pound veteran as starter Mehmet Okur recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon. Okur was injured in Utah's playoff opener at Denver, and might not be available for training camp and the preseason.

General manager Kevin O'Connor announced the deal Wednesday in a statement. Terms were not disclosed.

Elson has averaged 3.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in seven NBA seasons.

Free agent Malik Allen signs with Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orlando Magic have signed free-agent forward Malik Allen, bringing their training camp roster to 15 players.

The Magic announced the signing Thursday.

The 32-year-old Allen played 51 games for the Denver Nuggets last season. He has averaged five points and nearly three rebounds per game in nine NBA seasons.

Orlando already has several forwards who play heavy minutes, including Rashard Lewis, Brandon Bass and Ryan Anderson. So Allen will likely play a limited role should he make the final roster.

The Magic begin training camp Sept. 28.

Denver Post.com Denver Broncos Blog Entry from Today on McDaniels and Nuggets coach Karl exchange info at Dove Valley with Picture of Nuggets Coach George Karl at the top of the blog entry

Here is the DenverPost.com Denver Broncos Blog Entry from Today on McDaniels and Nuggets coach Karl exchange info at Dove Valley with Picture of Nuggets Coach George Karl at the top of the blog entry:

Nuggets coach George Karl was at Broncos headquarters Wednesday to meet with Josh McDaniels. (John Leyba, The Denver Post)

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels is a pretty secretive guy when it comes to his team’s meetings and game plans. But on Wednesday he was more than happy to open his meeting rooms and practice session at Dove Valley to welcome Nuggets head coach George Karl.

McDaniels invited Karl, who is recovering from throat cancer, to spend the day here to information, discussing philosophies on coaching, scouting, teaching, and game preparation.

“I’m a big fan of his and what he’s done in his career. He’s had great success in the NBA and I’m a big NBA fan,” McDaniels said. “Certainly he’s overcome a great deal of adversity, personally with the things he’s had to deal with. It’s just a great privilege to have him around us.”

Karl said he was a silent observer in the Broncos morning meetings but that he would speak to the full team later Wednesday if asked by McDaniels. Karl said he was impressed with the level of sophistication of the Broncos’ preparation — comparing it to the way the Nuggets get ready for a playoff series. It seems the two coaches also share some basic philosophies.

“The one thing he said in his talk today that I really believe in is it’s how you play. It’s not necessarily how well you play or who you play,” Karl said. “Teaching is developing your players into how to play the game the right way. And the more players you have that play the right way, the easier it is to coach.”

Both coaches were asked, somewhat in jest, if Karl would seek advice from McDaniels on how to deal with an unhappy superstar player. Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony is reportedly looking for a trade, a situation to which McDaniels can surely relate after dealing with Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall in the last two offseasons.

“Fortunately that’s not my realm of responsibility,” Karl said. “My realm is trying to convince Melo to stay, and I’ll continue to do that when I have the opportunity.”

A few questions about the Denver Nuggets 2010-11 season with pictures from DenverStiffs.com

Here is A few questions about the Denver Nuggets 2010-11 season with pictures from DenverStiffs.com:

Can Coach Karl make it through the entire year?

    George Pictures, Images and Photos
Last year, the Denver Nuggets were a top team in the West. They were nominated as the team to dethrone the Lakers.
But then, a familiar foe struck. Cancer had once again taken over Coach Karl, ending his season with the Nuggets. At first, he tried  to come back, but it was simply too much for him to bear. Instead, assistant head coach Adrain Dantley took over a team that was slowly falling apart. He lost control of the team and, together, they faltered in the playoffs.
Months later, we have heard that George Karl is getting better and plans on coming back to coach a disorganized Nuggets squad next season. As exciting as it sounds, I'm not 100% confident he's going to make it through the entire season. His health has been the Achilles Heel. It's really unfortunate because Karl is a darn good coach. Sure, we get mad when makes mistakes, but he's one of the main reasons why Denver can contend with the best.

Will the Nuggets give Ty Lawson more playing time?
A big question indeed. My guess is that with Chauncey Billups playing for Team U.S.A., Lawson will be seeing at least 25 minutes this year. Also, considering that J.R. Smith may not even be a Nugget next year, look for Lawson's role on the team to dramatically increase.

    Photobucket

Can the Nuggets survive the beginning of the season without Kenyon Martin and Chris Andersen?
No K-Mart. No Birdman. No problem, right?
    WRONG!
With them sitting out, the Denver Nuggets have almost no interior defense. Remember the Thunder game (the game Carmelo "quit" in)?  The Thunder were able to drive into the paint at will. Denver won't have that consistent rebounder and lock down defender. Denver won't have that "intimidating" shot blocker lurking around everywhere. In fact, the Nuggets are going to play "small ball" for a while.
We've been waiting for Nene to become an elite power forward/center, but he's inconsistent. He's a big body and the Nuggets are going to need Nene to step up his game big time. If he can also avoid injury, that'll be great.
Al Harrington is not going to replace anything Kenyon Martin brings to the table every game. He's not a monster rebounder. He's not a guy known for defense. However, when he gets fouled, he'll make more free throws. He'll also take a bunch of pressure off of Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups.

al harrington Pictures, Images and Photos

Can the Nuggets keep their focus against the sub-.500 teams?
Nuggets beat the Lakers. Nuggets lose to the Kings.
Nuggets beat the Jazz. Nuggets lose to the Clippers.
Nuggets beat the Mavericks. Nuggets lose to the Timberwolves.
Nuggets beat Orlando. Nuggets lose to the Knicks.
Yeah, you get the point.  Denver has a nasty habit of playing to the level of their opponent. No Defense. Always trying to outscore the opposing teams (see: Golden State). That has to stop. Play like the elite team you're supposed to be. You could have been the 3rd seed, maybe 2nd seed in the playoffs, had you taken every game seriously.
Implied facepalm Pictures, Images and Photos
Come on guys. We know you're more then capable of beating the sub-.500 teams. You want respect? Play like it.

Will Carmelo Anthony remain in Denver?
We want him to stay in Denver. We don't want to see him leave for the Knicks, or anybody else. We're close to winning a championship, so why would he leave? Why would he leave so much money on the table?Photobucket
There have been reports that Carmelo has had enough with the Nuggets and plans on leaving by a trade or in free agency next year. The thing is, it's all rumors.  Carmelo hasn't said a thing about it. All he has said is that he wants to see where the team is heading before he makes a decision.
Things aren't looking too good right now. Two of the Nuggets top eight players are going to be missing in action and they didn't do very much in the off-season. The organization did nothing in the draft (although they were "on the phones all night long") and then they fired two of the top guys in the front office, Mark Warkentien and Rex Chapman.
    Yeah, not very convincing.
People have to remember something: Carmelo has all year to make up his mind. That also gives (new Nuggets GM) Masai Ujiri plenty of time to trade Smith and Martin for some help. They don't have to trade Anthony, no matter how much he "addresses the case".
    Just hang in there.
